Completing a Tough Mudder is no small feat. Whether you are booking a 5k, 10k or 15k

challenge, they're packed with challenging obstacles designed to push your limits both mentally and physically.

Having recently conquered the London South course, I'm here to share the top 10 tips that will help you not only survive but thrive during your Tough Mudder journey.

1. Train for Upper Body Strength:

Many Tough Mudder obstacles require you to rely on your upper body strength. Exercises like pull-ups, push-ups, and climbing can significantly improve your ability to conquer walls and monkey bars like the infamous Funky Monkey.

Since having my kids I have relied on home training and the TRX is a great piece of kit to help with upper body strength.

2. Invest in quality Trail Trainers:

The course is not called Tough Mudder for nothing; expect mud, slippery surfaces, and a variety of terrains. While you might be tempted to wear your old sneakers, investing in a good pair of trail running shoes is essential. They provide the traction and support needed to navigate the challenging course safely.

A decent pair should also be waterproof, they'll get muddy but they should clean up well!

3. Dress Strategically:

Comfort and functionality should be your top priorities when choosing your race attire. Opt for moisture-wicking clothing to keep you dry and prevent chafing. Avoid cotton leggings unless you want to be dripping wet!

4. Hydration and Nutrition:

Proper hydration and nutrition are key to keeping your energy levels up throughout the race. Tough Mudder events are great because of their refuel stations situated around the course. These usually have water and hydration drinks as well as protein/oat bars from their sponsors.

5. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work:

Tough Mudder is not just a solo endeavour; it's an excellent opportunity to bond with friends or meet new ones on the course. Teamwork can be a game-changer, especially on obstacles like Everest, where helping hands can make the difference between success and defeat.

Don't be afraid to get involved, help someone if they look like they need it and don't be too proud to not seek help if you need it.

6. Master the Art of Pacing:

The Tough Mudder isn't just a running event. Pace yourself wisely, especially in the beginning, to conserve energy for the more challenging obstacles later on. A steady pace will help you maintain momentum and finish strong.

7. Mental Toughness:

The physical challenges are only part of the Tough Mudder experience. Mental resilience is equally important. Stay positive, focus on your goals, and don't let self-doubt creep in.

I have the tendency to claim 'I can't do this' before I haven't even started but I went into the obstacles with confidence and just wanting to do the best I could.

8. Practice Your Grip Strength:

Obstacles like Funky Monkey and Block Ness Monster will test your grip strength. To prepare, consider incorporating exercises like dead hangs and farmer's walks into your training routine. Strong grip will help you conquer these obstacles with confidence.

9. Embrace the Mud:

Tough Mudder is known for its mud, and there's no avoiding it. You will get it everywhere. Embrace the dirt and mud, knowing that it's all part of the fun. Don't worry about getting dirty; focus on enjoying the experience. There are showering facilities at the end and theres no better feeling then getting all warm and clean after dragging yourself through a Tough Mudder!

10. Celebrate Your Achievements:

Crossing the Tough Mudder finish line is an accomplishment worth celebrating. Whether it's your 1st or 20th Tough Mudder (I ran with my friend Lara who completed her 20th!) , take a moment to revel in your success. You've pushed your limits, conquered obstacles, and proven your strength both mentally and physically.
