How to create the cardboard box photoshoot without a cardboard box!

Writer's picture: Lauren AllenLauren Allen

Recently I have seen an array of cute Cardboard Box photoshoots. I really wanted to recreate but I couldn't find a big enough cardboard box and doubted whether my boys would voluntarily get in a box in the first place so I turned to Canva to see what I could do.

Here was the result (see below for a step by step how to with screenshots, I have also shared a reel here

All you need is a phone or camera to take the images.

Somewhere to sit - the clearer the background the better but we had no trouble with sitting on the sofa.

Step 1.

Take a selection of images of your subject/s in a seated position. Be mindful that their poses will all need to fit within a rectangle box so watch for wide arms and legs.

You can get playful by asking the subject/s to look down, up, to the left and to the right.

Upload these images to your phone or laptop/computer (depending on where you will be editing)

Step 2.

Download/open Canva - you can use this on a mobile app or on web.

Start a new design. You can choose the size you want.

Step 3.

Go to Elements and type in 'Cardboad box' add this to your design.

Step 4.

Rearrange and add as many boxes as desired in a format you want. I went with a simple 3 by 3. You can press duplicate on the carboard box to ensure you have consistency in size.

Step 5.

Upload all your images into Canva. One at a time you are going to add these into your design.

Click BG Remover and this will remove your background. (This is available to a premium user but if you are new to Canva you can get a 14 day free trial!)

Step 6.

Resize your image so it fits into the rectangular box. Once all images have gone through this process you may have to tweak sizes to get consistency.

Step 7.

If you have a busy background you may have to use the Background Remover tool and manually remove some of the background. This is fairly straight forward but I would suggest using a small brush and zooming into your image for the best results.

Step 8.

Once all your images are in, have removed backgrounds and are in position, it is time to decorate! Head back over to Elements and search for 'christmas lights' 'fairy lights' etc.

Add this into your design where you see fit.

Step 9.

Once you are happy with your design you can save by clicking Share and pick the format you want the image/design to be saved as!

And thats it! You have a playful and fun image to use on Christmas cards, socials or kept save as a memory!
